Steampunk Kingfisher Poster

This bird illustration was a college assignment where we were restricted to eight forms (as shown on the facing page in the bottom right). It was an exercise used to get us familiar with using the pathfinder tool. I was extremely excited to take on this challenge. I wanted to make a mechanical bird that was based off the Kingfisher species.
We were not given and circles, let alone gears, so I set out to build one. I enjoyed tackling this visual design problem, it reminded me of building intricate puzzles. I wanted him to have a cold mechanical look, but not lose the colours of the Kingfisher. I also juxtaposed the feathers against the robotic parts to highlight the contrast between nature and man-made machine.
