I wanted to use Martin Luther King’s quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can to that.” My goal was creating a dramatic contrast between dark and light, love and hate. I intentionally pushed the word “darkness” into the background. I used subtle bevels and directional lighting to slightly lift the words out of the black backdrop. I wanted the word to embody darkness but still be visible.
I then created the word “light” and anything surrounding it was touched by its glow and illuminated in orange. I wanted that word to literally light up and glow in the design. I then used a textured, tattered font for the word “hate” in a colour that symbolizes anger. Finally, I intertwined the word “hate” and “love” and have the love overshadowing and wiping out the hate.
